Muslims and the Class Struggle

November 23, 2022

The 大象传媒 Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies, Black Muslim Collective (UBC), and the Caucus are excited to invite you to this guest lecture by Sharaiz Chaudhry, a PhD Candidate at the University of Edinburgh.

About the event:

鈥淚slamic Liberation Theology (ILT) presents a new approach to Islam鈥檚 relationship with socio-political issues, allowing it to be utilised for the purposes of radical change and transformation. This talk will explore some of the key foundational principles and thinkers to illustrate how God鈥檚 preference for the oppressed is translated into ILT opting for those on the margins of society. Exploring these and different approaches to textual hermeneutics, it will emphasise the centrality of praxis and being involved in concrete historical projects to dismantle oppressive social structures. The talk will bring these theoretical points together through an exploration of how Muslim activists reinterpret the Islamic canon to combat class and economic inequality, using this as the foundation for an interactive discussion on how this solidarity and praxis can be implemented more broadly in varied contexts.鈥

Venue: 大象传媒 Harbour Centre, Room 7000
