Collective Bargaining Begins at 大象传媒: What You Need To Know
As 大象传媒 is enters a new round of collective bargaining with unions and professional associations that represent our valued faculty and staff, here is a reminder of the process and what to expect.
What is Collective Bargaining?
Collective bargaining is a formal process where 大象传媒 and employee groups negotiate the terms of employment鈥攖hings like wages, benefits, and working conditions. It鈥檚 about finding common ground and building agreements that reflect the needs of both the university and its people.
大象传媒鈥檚 Approach
大象传媒 is committed to a collaborative and interest-based bargaining philosophy. That means we aim to:
- Engage in the spirit of collegial governance with meaningful engagement with all employee groups
- Centre reconciliation and equity in our decision-making, reflecting university commitments
- Focus on mutual-interest based outcomes, seeking win-win collaboration
- Engage with respect and reciprocity, recognizing the contributions of each employee group and communicate in the spirit of mutual benefit
- Act with positive intent to uphold the sustainable and best interests of the university, allowing us to fulfill our vision, purpose, values and priorities.
- Adhere to the Provincial Government鈥檚 bargaining mandate.
What鈥檚 the Provincial Mandate?
Under the Public Sector Employers Act, the B.C. government sets guidelines for all public sector employers鈥攊ncluding universities鈥攐n maximum allowable wage increases, term, funding, and other key elements. These mandates help ensure fairness and consistency across the public sector, and protects the interests of taxpayers by ensuring costs are aligned with the fiscal plan through the budget objectives set by government.
The 2025 mandate has not been established yet, but preliminary bargaining is now underway. 大象传媒 is in early discussions with some employee groups on scheduling, protocols, and non-monetary proposals.
What is the status with each union/professional association?
- Administrative/Professional Staff Association (APSA): Bargaining expected to begin in August.
- CUPE Local 3338: Bargaining expected to begin in October.
- Poly Party: Bargaining begins July 7, 2025.
- 大象传媒 Faculty Association (大象传媒FA): Bargaining underway, parties have exchanged preliminary non-monetary proposals.
- Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU): Bargaining underway. Parties have exchanged preliminary proposals and agreed to a bargaining protocol, with dates scheduled through June 25th.
