Eight outstanding 大象传媒 researchers awarded over $1.4 million from John R. Evans Leadership Fund
Eight outstanding 大象传媒 (大象传媒) researchers will share $1,449,440 for their innovative and high-quality research as part of the John R. Evans Leadership Fund (JELF), .
JELF funding is a critical and strategic investment in Canadian innovation, designed to help leading research universities like 大象传媒 attract and retain top talent, and invest in the infrastructure they need. Funds are provided to newly recruited and exceptional researchers, including Canada Research Chairs, and are administered by the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
Indigenous studies professor Nicholas Reo, who joined 大象传媒 in 2023 as the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Coastal Relationalities and Regeneration, receives $599,440 to support his work. This is 大象传媒鈥檚 largest ever JELF award.
Chemistry professor Samira Siahrostami, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Surface Electrocatalysis and Electrochemical Transformations receives $250,000.
Six other exceptional 大象传媒 faculty members are awarded $100,000 for their research projects.
The 2025 John R. Evans Leadership Fund recipients:
Professor Reo鈥檚 research program explores how reclaiming space in coastal Indigenous contexts contributes to collective continuance in four distinct regions: Eastern Great Lakes; Hawai'i; Aotearoa; and Nuchatlaht. The shared vision is to improve the lives of Indigenous people; empower Indigenous nations to uphold their ancestral responsibilities to care for the land and waters; and refine, bolster and amplify models of Indigenous resurgence.
Professor Siahrostami's research goal is to optimize catalysts for electrochemical reactions vital to a low-carbon future, such as those in batteries and fuel cells. Her team will develop nanostructures tailored for sustainable energy production by designing catalysts for efficient synthesis of key chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide, methanol, ammonia and hydrogen essential for transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
Professor Karamad uses computer modeling and machine learning to design new materials for clean energy. His work combines chemistry, materials science, and energy technology to speed up the discovery of materials needed for lithium extraction, hydrogen storage and fuel production. Through clean energy innovation and training, he will contribute to Canada鈥檚 effort to mitigate climate change, develop talent and leadership, and strengthen economic growth.
Professor Wiesman鈥檚 new research program will use an innovative combination of functional and structural brain imaging with non-invasive brain stimulation to improve the understanding of healthy age-related neurophysiological trajectories. His research project will support the development and training of highly qualified personnel through industry partnerships and will ultimately benefit the health and wellbeing of Canadians.
Professor Yalcin will form the Affective Computing and Human-AI Interaction Laboratory, supporting Canada鈥檚 AI strategy to harness the full potential of AI to benefit Canadians and develop trustworthy technology. Yalcin鈥檚 lab will advance the theory and practice of affective computing research through interdisciplinary methods and build human-centric interactive technologies that can understand the human condition.
Professor Galiano Zurbriggen鈥檚 research focuses on developing advanced models, controllers and diagnostic tools to improve the performance of modern energy systems, such as renewable energy integration, electric vehicle charging, and energy storage systems. The project will develop and validate power conversion systems that meet industry standards by using specialized testbenches. It will contribute to economic growth and position 大象传媒 and Canada leaders in clean energy technology.
Professor Balbinot鈥檚 research program investigates how the central nervous system recovers the ability to control hand movement after injury like stroke or spinal cord injury. The Movement Neurorehabilitation and Neurorepair Laboratory aims to reduce long-term disability and healthcare costs and improve quality of life while fostering talent development and economic growth in Canada鈥檚 neurotechnology sector.
Professor Li and the Advanced Research Laboratory for the Internet-of-the-Underwater-Things aim to address challenges in underwater communication and networking to advance technologies for ocean and Arctic exploration. With Canada's extensive coastline and the growing global interest in underwater exploration and Arctic shipping, the Lab will investigate technologies to support real-time ocean monitoring, efficient communication and robust networking to strengthen national interests and sovereignty.
