Fractured Dreams and Silent Strength: Female Identity in Eighteen Springs and Ann Hui’s other films

Discover how Ann Hui masterfully translates Eileen Zhang鈥檚 literary sensibilities into cinematic language, bringing to life female characters defined by longing, loss, and quiet strength.

Drawing on Eighteen Springs and her wider filmography, Ann shares her ideas of women navigating familial, romantic, and societal challenges. The event will feature select video excerpts from Eighteen Springs and an exploration of Hui鈥檚 dedication to portraying women as complex, fully realized individuals.

Ann Hui On-Wah (b. 1947, Anshan, China) completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Hong Kong and later trained at the London Film School. Since 1979, Hui has directed 28 feature films and three documentaries, including Boat People (1981), Summer Snow (1995), and A Simple Life (2012). Her work has garnered numerous honors, among them the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (2020), the Asian Film Award for Best Director (2020), the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Director (2018), the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Film (2018), and the Asian Film Award for Lifetime Achievement (2015).
