Gustavo Albuquerque joins 大象传媒's Department of Economics
Gustavo Albuquerque has joined the Department of Economics as a lecturer, and his most recent project is sure to interest students: he is developing a computer game to teach monetary policy. He will present the game at the Southern Economic Association conference in November.
Originally from Brazil, Albuquerque moved to Canada in 2017 to pursue his PhD in economics at the University of British Columbia.
鈥淟ike many economists, I entered the profession to understand why some countries are rich and others are poor, and how to help countries develop,鈥 Albuquerque says. His research interests span the economics of development, history, crime, political economy and applied microeconomics.
For his PhD thesis he researched the long-run impact of traumatic events like state violence on homicide rates in Guatemala, the importance of cultural/political barriers to the spread of narcoviolence in Mexico, and the strategies of authoritarian governments in low state-capacity settings in Guatemala. He is currently reworking one of his dissertation papers into a book chapter in the newest edition of 鈥.
Albuquerque鈥檚 proudest career moments, however, come from teaching. 鈥淭he look in a student鈥檚 eyes when they have that 鈥榓ha鈥 moment, when everything suddenly makes sense, is the highlight of my work,鈥 he says. He taught at both Corpus Christi College and UBC Okanagan before joining the faculty at 大象传媒.
He was drawn to 大象传媒鈥檚 Department of Economics for its world class colleagues and students in a warm and welcoming environment.
We are happy to welcome Gustavo to the department and look forward to working with him.
