Engineering student takes home gold at the Skills Canada National Competition

June 23, 2025

By showcasing his technical excellence and precision, Kavish Arora emerged victorious at this year鈥檚 (SCNC). The engineering science student received a gold medal at the event, outperforming students from across the country.

Following his success at the provincial competition, Arora advanced to the national championship held in Regina last month. The SCNC is a multi-trade and technology competition that invites over 500 of the country鈥檚 most skilled students and apprentices, providing them with the opportunity to grow, network and display their skills on a national level.

Arora participated in the post-secondary electronics category, demonstrating his expertise in circuit analysis, fault finding, printed circuit board (PCB) assembly and related competencies. On the first day of competition, Arora completed fault finding and circuit analysis, identifying the circuit issue and reworking the PCB. He then addressed embedded programming and bread board assembly to meet design specifications. The final day focused on PCB design and assembly, with participants being evaluated on functionality, solder quality and overall workmanship.

Arora credits his co-op experiences for equipping him for the competition.

鈥淢y co-op experience has been incredibly valuable in preparing me for this competition,鈥 says Arora. 鈥淚 currently work at a PCB assembly company where I inspect and assemble boards for major tech clients such as Honeywell, Baker Hughes and Ballard. The continuous exposure to real-world PCB designs has certainly helped me sharpen my design skills.鈥

By applying knowledge from his work experience, he executed the challenges effectively, leading to his success at the competition.

Arora developed a passion for electronics in high school, where his teacher introduced him to the field and competition.

鈥淢y electronics teacher taught me how to solder and challenged me with projects that exposed me to practical electronics,鈥 explains Arora. 鈥淗is mentorship played a crucial role in both my competition performance and my academic journey at 大象传媒.鈥

As Arora reflects on his time at the SCNC, he has recognized this experience as a meaningful opportunity for growth.

鈥淏eyond the technical knowledge I acquired, my biggest takeaway from the competition was learning how to remain calm and composed under pressure,鈥 says Arora. I also learned to take advantage of opportunities which have been valuable for my personal and professional growth.鈥
