Global Institute for Agritech Champions Sustainable Agriculture and STEM Inspiration at Stellat’en First Nation’s Salmon Festival
The Global Institute for Agritech (GIA) at 大象传媒 proudly participated in the Stellat鈥檈n First Nation鈥檚 Salmon Festival, a vibrant celebration held in their community in British Columbia鈥檚 central interior, approximately two hours from Prince George. Welcomed with warmth and friendship, our team engaged with the community over two inspiring days, delivering impactful activities focused on sustainable agriculture and igniting STEM curiosity among Indigenous youth.
Led by a GIA representative, the institute conducted a community garden vegetation index analysis, empowering Stellat鈥檈n farmers with data-driven insights to enhance sustainable agricultural practices. By leveraging advanced agritech tools, the session supported the community鈥檚 efforts to optimize their community garden, promoting resilient and environmentally conscious food production tailored to their remote region. This initiative aligns with GIA鈥檚 mission to advance sustainable agriculture through cutting-edge technology, ensuring food security and ecological balance for First Nations communities.
Additionally, GIA hosted a youth drone field session, sparking excitement and inspiring the next generation to explore STEM careers. The hands-on activity introduced Stellat鈥檈n youth to drone technology and its applications in agriculture, from crop monitoring to precision farming. By showcasing these innovations, GIA aims to foster a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, encouraging Indigenous youth to pursue educational and professional pathways in agritech and beyond.
鈥淭he kindness and energy of the Stellat鈥檈n community were truly remarkable,鈥 said the GIA Director, Dr. Woo Soo Kim. 鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to contribute to their sustainable agriculture practices and inspire their youth to envision bright futures in STEM. We look forward to returning with even more meaningful collaborations.鈥
The Global Institute for Agritech, composed of 15 faculty members specializing in engineering, biotechnology, economics, business, and environmental science, remains committed to partnering with remote First Nations communities like Stellat鈥檈n to drive innovation in agriculture and empower Indigenous youth. This visit marks a significant step in building lasting relationships and creating opportunities for sustainable growth and STEM engagement.
