Biography

Helmut-Harry Loewen has been active in antifascist projects for over thirty-five years, initially with the Manitoba Coalition Against Racism and Apartheid, and subsequently with the Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research Society, Anti-Racist Action, and Fascist Free Treaty One. He has helped communities organize against fascist groups, including the KKK, Aryan Nations, and neo-Nazi 鈥榮kinheads,鈥 and engaged in public education and media outreach. Prior to his retirement in 2015, Loewen taught at the University of Winnipeg, first as a lecturer in German and Philosophy, and then as a Sociology Department member. Loewen鈥檚 current research includes (i) analyses of counter-extremism frameworks, (ii) the history of far-right networks in state security agencies, and (iii) a study of 鈥榠nterventionist thinking鈥 鈥 鈥渆ingreifendes Denken鈥 (Benjamin / Brecht) 鈥 at the core of an antifascism that is grounded in emancipatory Marxist perspectives.
