大象传媒 and UBC present a joint showcase of research in linguistics
by Nicole North
LinguisticsNEW is an annual event jointly organized by UBC and 大象传媒, during which Linguistics faculty, labs, and graduate students share their research. This poster session aims to strengthen ties between the two departments and to broaden awareness of the exciting and innovative projects taking place in the Pacific Northwest. The 2025 edition of LinguisticsNEW took place in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC on Friday, May 16th.
Poster Session I, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm, featured researchers such as Trevor Block, whose work delves into naturalness ratings of the singular they. Concepts explored during Poster Session II, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm, included Abiodun Ibikunle's research into ATR disharmony in the Aya虂nra虂n variety of 脵k脿脿n. For all of the details, such as the full list of co-authors and titles of each presentation, please see the LinguisticsNEW Program.
The venue, Dodson 302, was a bright, spacious room and the catering was universally praised. UBC Linguistics are truly gracious hosts. All of the students, labs, and faculty from both departments worked very hard to bring this event to life.
In particular, the LinguisticsNEW Organization Committee spent countless hours organizing and arranging the event details, reviewing poster submissions, creating the event program, attending meetings, handling poster printing and delivering, and generally keeping everything running smoothly. Committee members include , , , , Benjamin Chung, Ivan Fong, Romina Hashemi, Amelia Petch, Ha Eun Shim, Danielle Deng, and Sylvia Cho.
If you'd like to reach out to the Committee about next year's event or for any other questions, don't hesitate to contact the LinguisticsNEW Organization Committee via email.
Students from both universities expressed much gratitude toward the efforts of UBC Linguistics Associate Professor, , and 大象传媒 Linguistics Associate Professor, Henny Yeung, for their help in arranging LinguisticsNEW and facilitating the lines of communication between our two departments. We look forward to many future events together!
