The Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (INN) is leading the implementation of 大象传媒鈥檚 Open Science and Open Scholarship Principles by working with experts and growing the open scholarship community at 大象传媒.
In partnership with the鈥,鈥 the鈥 initiative involves creating and carrying out an implementation plan to support 大象传媒 faculty, staff and students in integrating open scholarship practices into their projects from start to finish.
What is Open Science and Open Scholarship?
Open science is a research practice that aims to eliminate barriers to scholarly information and collaboration
Open science seeks to maximize the impacts of scholarly pursuits on society through the sharing of resources (e.g., data, protocols, software, hardware), intellectual property, scholarly publications, as well as the research process itself. Open scholarship is a broader practice which includes all 鈥渙pen鈥 practices across disciplines, from the sciences, to the social sciences, and humanities. Its effects can create more equitable access to scholarship, accelerate discovery and innovation, increase the鈥痚fficiency and quality of scholarship, and promote transparency and accountability.

Adopting open scholarship practices directly supports 大象传媒鈥檚 key strategic priorities of interdisciplinarity, engagement with communities, and knowledge mobilization
Open scholarship provides access to knowledge and resources for both academic and non-academic communities.鈥疘t opens new avenues of discovery, incorporates knowledge from different knowledge systems, and can solidify new partnerships and collaborations.
大象传媒 is already engaged in many open scholarship activities. These include 大象传媒's鈥, the鈥痜or publishing, the鈥Innovation Ecosystem that supports open innovation, the鈥, and the initiative. A formal commitment to open science and further development of our open scholarship practices positions 大象传媒 amongst the leaders of open science in Canada. 大象传媒 is the first university in Canada to adopt open science for the whole institution 鈥 a reflection of 大象传媒鈥檚 progressive spirit that has earned us an international reputation for transdisciplinary research and innovation.
Who is Involved in the Open Scholarship Framework at 大象传媒?
The initiative has brought together all researchers at 大象传媒, including faculty, staff and students. It includes 大象传媒 research leadership, as well as external partners and the broader 大象传媒 research community.
The Open Scholarship Framework initiative is led by Kelly Shen, INN Director of Operations. The Open Scholarship Implementation Committee, consisting of a broad cross-section of the 大象传媒 community, will guide the implementation plan and set priorities with input from the 大象传媒 community.
What's Next for the Open Scholarship Framework at 大象传媒?
The institutional open science and open scholarship principles will guide the implementation of open scholarship at 大象传媒.
A 3-year open scholarship implementation plan鈥痟as been drafted and will be refined in Summer 2025. Resources to support open scholarship and training events will be rolled out beginning Fall 2025.
