Graduate checklist
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from 大象传媒. This is an amazing accomplishment and you should be 大象传媒 proud!
A. Official graduation check
- When you are completing your capstone draft or final course it is recommended that you run your Academic Progress Report (APR). Your APR will show any outstanding program or university requirements. The only requirement that should show as 鈥淣ot Satisfied鈥 is your final capstone.
- If you have any questions about your progress please reach out to your graduate supervisor or Graduate Program Assistant.
B. Names for graduation documents and convocation
Gender
Gender does not appear on any of the documents that support graduation or the convocation ceremony (i.e., graduation application, dean鈥檚 card, digital program book), nor is gender displayed on the official transcript.
The only time a student鈥檚 gender might be referenced during the ceremony is through pronouns used to refer to the student if they are a convocation medal recipient or a graduand speaker. For medal recipients, a citation is written about the student. Medal recipients and graduand speakers are notified in advance of the ceremony and are provided with a form where they can include their preferred name and pronouns prior to the event.
Name
Legal names are automatically used in all convocation processes and documents. For those whose gender-affirming name differs from their legal name please see the process below to learn which documents can be requested to have your gender-affirming name appear.
When you complete the graduation application through go大象传媒, you will be asked to confirm your name. If the name that appears is incorrect or differs from your affirmed name you can still submit your graduation application, and request for your name to be changed after submission.
The deadline to submit your gender-affirming name change request for your parchment is the date senate meets to award degrees (May for June ceremonies, September for October ceremonies).
Updating Your Name
Legal Name Change
- If you have legally changed your name and want to make a change in our records, please complete the Name Change Application form and submit it and your documentation to grad_reg@sfu.ca.
Gender Identity Name Change
- Before making the request to change your name, ensure that your chosen name in go大象传媒 reflects your gender affirming name. If you need to make updates to your chosen name, you can do so following the process outlined here.
- To request your gender-affirming name on select documents as listed below, please contact gsupport@sfu.ca. Please note that this request would only impact the name that appears on the parchment, at the ceremony, your thesis submission, and in the digital program book. Other documents, such as the official transcript, Senate letter, and confirmation of enrolment letter, must use your legal name.
- Please be aware that there may be some implications from changing the name that appears on your parchment which create issues or barriers in the future. For further information, please see Implications for Parchment Name Changes below.
The table below outlines the documents related to graduation and the name type that can be used. If no gender-affirming name is identified to our office, your legal name will appear on all the following documents.

Implications for Parchment Name Changes
Your parchment may be used as a form of verification in the future. Having a non-legal name appear on your parchment could result in delays or issues when the document is used for:
- student loans payments
- degree verification
- study permit application/renewal
- residency/citizenship applications
- job applications requiring confirmation of degree
- professional certification
For degree verification purposes, legal names will be used.
Should you need your parchment reprinted with your legal name, you can purchase a reprint of your parchment. Parchment replacements can be requested through the Parchment Replacement Form. For more information, please see here.
During your final term you will need to apply to graduate. You may apply to graduate at any time in what you're planning to be your final term and you do not have to wait until your defence or thesis has been submitted to the library. If circumstances change, it is a straightforward process to withdraw your application to graduate.
Convocation June 2025
You must apply to graduate no later than Friday, April 18.
Convocation October 2025
If you鈥檙e completing requirements in Summer 2025, you must apply to graduate no later than Friday, August 8.
Process:
- Log into your student account at .
- Click the drop down menu under Academics.
- Select Apply for Graduation.
- Read the instructions, scroll down, and click the Accept button to begin the online application process.
- After payment is processed in step 10, return to Student Task WorkCentre tab to click Complete button to submit the application.
- To check your graduation application status, to cancel your application, or for any other questions, please refer to the FAQ page.
NOTE: If you encounter any errors or issues with the graduation application please take the following steps:
- Make sure your browser is up to date.
- Check your browser settings and change if necessary to allow pop-ups.
- Clear your cache, close your browser, and try again.
- Try a different browser, such as Microsoft Edge or Safari.
- Ensure your browser default language is US English default (see screen shot).
If you are in a master鈥檚 or doctoral program that requires an oral defence and library submission this must take place prior to April 30 if you're graduating in June 2025.
Approximately 3 weeks before convocation, you can confirm your attendance:
- Log into go大象传媒
- On the top right-hand corner, select the compass icon (Nav Bar) and click Navigator > Self Service > Graduation/Convocation > Confirm Convoc Attendance
- Click the ceremony code for your designated ceremony (A through I)

- Read the permission to release photographs and select your choice
- Click Confirm Attendance
- A new screen will open confirming your attendance.
- NOTE: You may confirm that you have successfully completed this process by checking that the "Confirm Attendance" link is now greyed out.
Regalia
All graduands wear regalia at convocation. At 大象传媒 it normally includes a gown, hood and a hat or Cambridge Bonnet. Master鈥檚 and Doctoral students wear a hood specific to their credential. Gowns are not floor length and your mid-calf and lower may be exposed. Doctoral students should also note that their gowns are open in the front which will show part of your outfit underneath.
Graduands are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of, the gown at the convocation ceremonies. In these instances, graduands must still be hooded.
Renting
Once you have confirmed your attendance now you need to rent your regalia. You may rent your regalia the day of convocation, however, you receive a discount when reserving in advance.
- Follow the instructions from Gaspard and click Rent Regalia
- You will be prompted to add your information, review your order and submit payment

- When sending an email to Gaspard please include your name, institution name, student number and order number.

Instead of renting you may purchase your regalia directly through .
Not attending convocation?
Your parchment normally be available for pick up at GPS during normal office hours starting the week after convocation. You may designate another individual to pick it up on your behalf by adding a document pick-up release on your go大象传媒 account.
All parchments not picked up at the end of the month will be mailed to your mailing address.
