Daria (Dasha) Gluhareva鈥檚 doctoral thesis, , introduced a novel, real-time method to study how second language speakers assess their own English speech. This method revealed that speech assessment is a dynamic process, changing moment to moment as speech unfolds.

Gluhareva鈥檚 research challenged previous research that concluded that second language speakers鈥 self-ratings were often closely aligned with those of native listeners and failed to capture variability over time, offering new ways to understand and support pronunciation and speaking development in language learning, teaching, and assessment contexts. Gluhareva鈥檚 research pioneered an innovative technique that goes beyond traditional methodological constraints, helping to advance theory, refine methodologies, and improve instructional approaches for second language learners.

In addition to earning a 4.26 CGPA during her studies, Gluhareva was an active participant in major conferences for several years and recently presented her dissertation findings at the most influential North American L2 (second language learners) pronunciation conference. To date she has authored several publications, one of which has already received over 130 citations.

大象传媒 professor emeritus and supervisor, Murray J. Munro sees a bright future for Gluhareva.

Says Munro, 鈥淭hroughout her doctoral program, I have been continually impressed by Dasha鈥檚 critical thinking skills and her eagerness to explore uncharted research territory. She is remarkably self-motivated and demonstrates exceptional teamwork skills thanks to her excellent interpersonal abilities. She has demonstrated remarkable scholarly promise, and I look forward to following her future career with great enthusiasm.鈥

Gluhareva reflects fondly on her supervisor, the Department of Linguistics, and time at 大象传媒.

Says Gluhareva, 鈥淚 am deeply honored to receive this award and grateful for the support I received during my time at 大象传媒. Working with Dr. Murray Munro was an incredible privilege. He trusted me to follow my own ideas, gave me the freedom to explore new directions, and always offered thoughtful and constructive feedback. I learned not only how to conduct rigorous research, but also how to think more critically and creatively about complex problems. I am also thankful to the Department of Linguistics for providing such a supportive, fun, and intellectually rich atmosphere to grow as a researcher, instructor, and person.鈥

Gluhareva works as a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kassel in Germany, where she trains future English teachers and continues her research in applied linguistics.
