Franklin Tam
I completed my undergraduate studies at 大象传媒 in the MBB department, where I did co-op work terms and also an undergraduate honours thesis. This led me to become interested in research, and I went on to finish my PhD at 大象传媒 in Dr. Jonathan Choy鈥檚 laboratory in 2025. There, I studied the regulation and function of an inflammatory gene, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), using a variety of molecular/biochemical methods along with bioinformatic methods for RNA-seq analysis. I very much enjoyed my time as a PhD candidate in the Choy lab and built life-long connections and friendships (and also gained a passion for brewing pour over coffee).
I am now a postdoctoral fellow co-supervised by Dr. Sharon Gorski, also from the department of MBB, and Dr. Jonathan Loree who is a medical oncologist at BC Cancer. My research now is focused on neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), an uncommon and heterogeneous type of cancer, where I am working to develop NEN organoid laboratory models. Alongside of this, I am aiming to discover biomarkers that will identify NENs that may be associated with poor outcomes. The support I have in this research environment is excellent, allowing me to pursue my interests in cancer research while gaining exposure to translational and clinical research. I also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from around the world, greatly enhancing my ability to perform novel and exciting research. Best of all, I have met and still am meeting amazing people in this space!
