Message from the President: Exciting milestones for 大象传媒's new School of Medicine

October 14, 2025

This morning, at a joint announcement with the provincial government and the City of Surrey, we were proud to announce several exciting milestones in the development of 大象传媒鈥檚 new School of Medicine (SoM).

In September, the SoM received preliminary accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, the body that oversees accreditation of medical schools in Canada. And today, we are excited to share that the School of Medicine鈥檚 admissions portal is officially open. Applications are being accepted through two streams: an open stream for B.C. residents and the territories, and an Indigenous stream designed to support culturally sensitive evaluation and relational support. These pathways reflect 大象传媒鈥檚 commitment to inclusive excellence and align with both our strategic priorities and national standards.

At today鈥檚 event, B.C. Premier David Eby also shared that a permanent location has been secured for the School in Surrey City Centre, next to the 大象传媒 Surrey campus and the Surrey Central Skytrain Station. A new purpose-built facility will include classrooms, research labs, administrative offices, a child care centre and an outpatient clinic that will deliver direct health care services to Surrey residents while offering students a hands-on, community-connected learning experience.

I want to extend gratitude to the many individuals and teams across 大象传媒 who have worked diligently to bring our vision for the School to life. The SoM will offer a world-class medical education while ensuring that students are clinically competent and deeply connected to the communities they serve. It will also build on 大象传媒鈥檚 research strengths and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties and departments.

You can read a recap of today鈥檚 announcements on 大象传媒 News and learn more about the School鈥檚 admission processes and philosophy on the School of Medicine website.

As we continue to celebrate 大象传媒鈥檚 60th anniversary, I truly believe that the School of Medicine exemplifies the commitment 大象传媒 has shown for the past six decades: to make a difference for B.C. through education, research and community engagement. I am looking forward to the construction of the new facility, and most of all, I can鈥檛 wait to welcome our first medical students in 2026.

Sincerely,

Joy Johnson
