Congratulations to this year's Psychology Undergraduate Award winners! These awards honour psychology students for their academic excellence, outstanding leadership, and service within the community.
Maegan Fox
- PSYC Alumni Honours Award
Maegan recently completed her BA (Honours First Class) in Psychology, under the supervision of Dr. Alex Chapman. Her honours thesis explored correlates of PTSD in a sample of homeless shelter support-staff, and she presented her findings at the 2025 CPA Annual Conference in St. John鈥檚. Throughout her degree, she鈥檚 volunteered in numerous labs including the Intergroup Relations and Social Justice Lab, Autism and Developmental Disabilities Lab, and the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction. Outside of school, she has worked and volunteered as an intimate partner violence advocate, mental health worker, harm reduction worker, and police-based victim services caseworker. Maegan plans to continue in her advocacy for gender-based violence and victims of crime, late pursuing a career in medicine.
Brendan Fletcher
- PSYC Alumni Honours Award
Brendan recently completed his BA (Honours) in Psychology. Under the supervision of Dr. Tim Racine, his honours thesis examined the socio-historical context in which psychopathy emerged as both a psychological disorder and a personality construct. Currently, Brendan is a research assistant in the Spalek Laboratory for Attention, Memory, and Perception and in the Studies in Methodology and Philosophy of Psychological Science Lab. He is also an editing manager for 大象传媒鈥檚 Undergraduate Journal of Psychology. Brendan hopes to continue his education in medical school with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist.
Jacob Angeles
- Mary Batchelor Memorial Award
Jacob is completing his BA Honours in Psychology with a minor in Early Learning. Under the supervision of Dr. Jeremy Carpendale, his honours thesis explored how a balance of responsive and non-responsive caregiving may benefit a child鈥檚 development. Jacob works as a research assistant at the Early Social Development Lab and Grow to Care Lab. Among his various community engagement roles, Jacob volunteers at a hospice and works as a recreation supervisor at the Canucks Autism Network where he supports neurodiverse youth. Moving forward, Jacob aspires to compete his M.D. and specialize in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Tori Kazemir
- Mary Batchelor Memorial Award
Tori recently completed her BA (Honours First Class with Distinction) in Psychology. Her honours thesis, supervised by Dr. Shannon Zaitsoff, explored how the relative influence of various factors (e.g. relationship quality, physical appearance) on self-esteem relate to mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and global self-esteem. Tori continues to volunteer as a research assistant in Dr. Zaitsoff鈥檚 Weight and Eating Lab, as well as in Dr. Lara Aknin鈥檚 Helping and Happiness Lab, where she will soon step into the role of lab manager. In the future, she plans to pursue graduate school in clinical psychology.
Jordan Thorsen
- Crocker Family Award in Psychology
Jordan is currently completing his BA Honours in Psychology at 大象传媒, with a double minor in Counselling and Human Development and Legal Studies. This upcoming fall, he will begin writing his honours thesis under the supervision of Dr. David Cox. He has served as the president of the 大象传媒 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years and is the captain of 大象传媒 men's soccer. Outside of academics and athletics, Jordan works as a behavioural interventionist, youth soccer coach and student-athlete learning coach. Upon earning his degree, he plans to continue pursuing his passion for psychology and sport in graduate school.
Maya Beninteso
- Lorne M. Kendall Award
Maya recently completed her BA (Honours with Distinction) in Psychology with a minor in Criminology. Alongside Dr. Rebecca Cobb, her honours thesis examined how personal and relationship goals for a sexual problem discussion predicted relationship and sexual satisfaction in mixed-gender couples. Maya鈥檚 passion for research resulted in two publications and her involvement in four research labs, including the Close Relationships Labs, Helping and Happiness Lab, CORTECH Lab, and SECURE Lab. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Netball BC, championing for evidence-based mental health policies for athletes of all ages. In the future, Maya plans to complete an MA and PhD in clinical psychology.
