The Department of Psychology stands in solidarity against racism and injustice
The Department of Psychology stands with our Black and Indigenous communities, and communities of all people of colour. We support in condemning all forms of racism.
Recent events in Canada and the US have highlighted the severity of historical and continuing violence against people of colour. We recognize that events like these are not new, and that it is absolutely vital for us all to do better. In the midst of this global pandemic, we recognize that our Black and Indigenous students, faculty, and staff bear the extra weight of racism and racist violence. It is therefore important for all of us to exercise compassion and support one another as best we can. At the same time, we must continue to navigate building and sustaining an inclusive and just institution.
As a Department, we also recognize that we must do more than publicly denounce discriminatory behavior; we must actively create an inclusive space for all. We have actively begun that work, particularly focusing on the Psychology Department’s role in Indigenous Reconciliation. However, this is just a start, and we recognize that addressing racism and injustice is an ongoing effort.
In addition to institutional efforts, individual members of our Department and the public may wish to take action to help and support Black communities by: signing petitions, donating financial or tangible resources, amplifying the voices of Black people, educating ourselves about systemic racism, supporting Black business, artists, activists etc., and having discussions about these important issues with family, friends, and people in our community.
