Wolfgang Haider Memorial Book Award
The Wolfgang Haider Memorial Book Award is given out to recognize a highly successful graduating student in REM who has consistently exhibited a reputation for mentoring and contributing towards an improved student experience, both academically and socially, and perhaps also very engaged and involved with organizations or groups.
Congratulations to the June 2025 Award recipients!
Alyna De Guzman, BEnv, REM Major Planning Stream
Alyna De Guzman demonstrated exceptional leadership during her time at 大象传媒. Alyna carved a co-op journey serving as a Climate Change Intern for the BC Assembly of First Nations where she supported First Nations-led climate action, and as a team member in BC Housing鈥檚 People, Plants, and Homes Program where she helped communities around the Lower Mainland grow their own food and get access to organic produce. In her final year, Alyna stepped into the Food Justice Coordinator role at Embark Sustainability Society, where she organized monthly community kitchens for students and events centered on food literacy, food security, and Indigenous food sovereignty. For her last semester, she joined the Tanzania Climate Resilient Food Systems and Sustainable Development field school program at Aga Khan University and worked with a Maasai community in Makuyuni to create photographic archives for their growing cultural centre.
Jordyn Carss, Masters, Resource Management (Planning)
Jordyn Carss graduated REM with her MRM in Planning in June 2025. She was a member of the Food Systems Lab and partnered with the City of Prince Rupert to conduct a baseline food systems assessment involving spatial analysis and community engagement. She conducted her analysis through a social-ecological resilience lens to develop recommendations for Prince Rupert that enhance the adaptability of the food system, recognize the interconnectedness of ecological health and social-wellbeing, and promote equitable and sustainable practices rooted in local knowledge. During her time in REM, she was an events co-coordinator for REMSU (REM Student Union) and helped organize a camping trip, winter social, and spring formal that brought master鈥檚 and PhD students together to laugh, eat good food, and make connections. Since graduating, Jordyn has returned to environmental consulting and is getting involved in food systems and community planning projects for several BC First Nations.

Owen Wilson, Masters, Resource Management (Planning)

In April 2023, Owen was elected President for REMSU where he took responsibility for organizing and running the meetings as well as providing oversight on the budget. He liaised with both REM staff and faculty as well as the GSS, ensuring information was communicated to these groups and back to students.
