EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Welcome to the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) page for the Chemistry Department. Our vision is to create an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and included. This page serves as a central hub for EDI-related activities, resources, and initiatives within our department and beyond. Whether you're a newcomer looking to engage with EDI efforts or seeking to deepen your understanding of these important principles, we aim to provide you with the tools and support needed to foster inclusivity and equity.
EDI Active Groups In the Department of Chemistry
The EDI committee is tasked with overseeing EDI efforts within the Department of Chemistry. This committee consists of representatives from faculty working together to develop strategies, policies, and programs that promote inclusivity and diversity.
Our EDI group is dedicated to defining, implementing, and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Chemistry Department. Comprising members from staff, faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows, this group is responsible for developing initiatives, organizing events, and fostering a supportive environment for all individuals.
WIC is a graduate student led group in the Department of chemistry dedicated to promoting inclusivity, equity, and diversity in the chemical sciences. The group is hosting the IUPAC Global Women Breakfast, a global initiative aimed at celebrating and supporting women in chemistry in February every year.
Message from the Chair of Chemistry Department
In our continued pursuit of academic achievement and social responsibility, I would like to emphasize the crucial importance of our department's EDI efforts. Now, more than ever, we must acknowledge the need of creating a diverse and inclusive atmosphere. EDI is more than a phrase; it is the foundation of our dedication to integrity, justice, and growth.
In today's world, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage. Our commitment to EDI not only enriches our academic community but also enhances our ability to innovate, collaborate, and address complex challenges.
I invite you to actively participate in our department's EDI activities. Whether you participate in diversity training programs, advocate for inclusive policies, or promote various voices in our curriculum and research, your contributions are critical to establishing a culture of equity and inclusion.
Let us continue to accept our differences, celebrate our diversity, and create a department where everyone feels heard, supported, and respected.
Thank you for your commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in our department.
Upcoming Events:
At the Department of Chemistry, we actively celebrate several key events throughout the year as opportunities to connect, raise awareness, and engage in meaningful discussions around EDI matters. These events are not only about recognition but also about fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within our department.
We encourage everyone to participate in these events, and if you have any tasks or ideas to contribute, please don't hesitate to let Dr. Siahrostami, Associate Chair Equity, Diversity & Inclusion know. Here's a list of upcoming events we’ll be celebrating:
- February 11 – International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IUPAC Global Breakfast for Women)
- March 7 – International Day of Women
