Over the past five years, the Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) at 312 Main has grown into a dynamic hub for participatory, community-driven research at 大象传媒. Building on its origins in 大象传媒鈥檚 University Steering Committee on Community-Engaged Research, CERi now connects scholars, students, and community partners through a network of programs that translate research into real-world impact. This Five-Year Report highlights the evolution of CERi鈥檚 programs, partnerships, and projects, from the 312 Main Research Shop and Indigenous Knowledge Research Exchange to collaborative initiatives addressing climate resilience, housing justice, and democratic engagement. Through our projects, publications and programs, we illustrate how CERi鈥檚 approach to co-creation, training, and knowledge mobilization advances a more inclusive and responsive university research culture. learn more

The DTES Climate Resiliency Research & Advocacy Coordinator will play a pivotal role in advancing the DTES Climate Resilience Roadmap by supporting nonprofit organizations to strengthen preparedness, secure resources, and build collaborative climate response strategies. This shared role, supported by Vancity Community Foundation, Action on Climate (ACT) and 大象传媒 CERi, is designed to serve as a cross-organizational resource, helping Downtown Eastside service providers collectively anticipate, respond to, and recover from climate-related challenges鈥攚hile grounding this work in research and evidence. learn more

大象传媒鈥檚 Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) is hosting its 2025 Workshop Series at 312 Main in Vancouver, featuring a lineup of in-person sessions from September 2025 to March 2026. Open to the public, these 90-minute workshops bring together scholars, practitioners, and community members to explore critical aspects of community-engaged research, including collaboration, ethics, positionality, decolonization, knowledge mobilization, and community partnerships. Led by experienced facilitators such as Dr. Stuart Poyntz, Dr. Dorothy Christian, and Dr. Hannah McGregor, the series provides practical insights, tools, and dialogue to strengthen equity-centered research practices. Participants can attend individual sessions that align with their interests, with limited seating available. learn more

The research report, Community Voices: A Public Primer on News Reporting on Police Violence offers a practical review of the community impacts of, helpful and harmful narrative patterns in, and recommended standards for reporting on police violence. Through participatory analysis conducted in partnership with the Unlocking the Gates Services Society, these findings have been developed by community members who have experienced police violence to offer guidance to journalists, editors, and others who are interested in critical heart-based storytelling. The Student Co-Lead on this project, Emily R. Blyth, developed the research behind this publication through her time with the 2023-2024 CERi Graduate Fellowship program as a part her doctoral research which examines policing practices in Canada as a source of health inequity. This action-driven and accessibly written publication centers the voices of impacted community members to support the difficult work of reporting on police violence in ways that can expose the harms that police cause and that refuse to perpetuate those harms though uncritical narratives. learn more
