Criminal record check and educational licensure

Required document: Criminal record check (that includes the vulnerable sector) from the RCMP

Acceptance to our MD program is contingent upon being granted an educational license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (鈥淐PSBC鈥 or 鈥渢he College鈥). The educational license is required so that you can legally participate in clinical training and ensures you can safely interact with patients. We will work with CPSBC to facilitate the registration of incoming medical students.

Included within the CPSBC licensing procedure is a criminal record check. Anyone considering a career in medicine, who has been convicted of a criminal offence (even if given an absolute discharge) should write to the Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons prior to completing an application. By discussing this with the College, you鈥檒l be able to know if it鈥檚 possible to obtain an educational license. Without an educational license, you may not enroll in the 大象传媒 School of Medicine.

Immunization and testing requirements

Document deadline: June 30 of the year of admission
Required document: Proof of immunization (or serologic evidence of immunity) and testing results of the following requirements:

TESTING REQUIREMENTS (BEFORE PROGRAM ENTRY AND EVERY 3 YEARS)

  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Any positive blood-borne virus results must be reported to the CPSBC as part of the licensure process. Any student diagnosed with a blood-borne virus will likely require accommodations to ensure their safety and compliance with professional standards. Upon admission or upon becoming aware of their status, students are encouraged to meet with an advisor from the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) to determine accommodation needs related to their BBV status. CAL may work with Associate Dean, Learners to recommend possible modifications to clinical placements.

The above immunization and testing requirements are in compliance with the health-care worker guidelines provided by the BC Centre for Disease Control, Fraser Health, College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC), Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), and the Provincial Health Officer.

Further information on vaccines and testing requirements can be found here: Faculty Rule on Immunization and Testing Requirements
