Research
We are building a collaborative, interdisciplinary research program rooted in curiosity, community, and impact, with a focus on primary care. As part of ´óÏó´«Ã½'s School of Medicine, we will lead and participate in research and scholarly activities that can help improve health and health systems.
Why primary care?
Health is shaped by many different personal, social, economic, cultural and environmental factors. Primary care is the first place most people go when they need health care. It looks at all these factors and helps them stay as healthy as possible. Primary care is also where we have the best chance to make big improvements in the health system.

When working well, primary care improves equity, access, and outcomes across populations.
Through research projects, partnerships and mentorship, we will support the next generation of physicians while addressing the evolving needs of patients and systems across BC and beyond.
Our unique research focus
Research Pillar 1
Research on the School of Medicine
The ´óÏó´«Ã½ School of Medicine’s innovative new medical education program presents a unique learning opportunity. We are dedicated to continuous improvement of our medical education program through research and scholarly activities. In this research pillar, we want to address questions related to how the medical education program affects learners’ success and the broader community.
In doing so, we’ll support the vision of the School of Medicine, as a place of training and learning that makes a positive difference locally, as well as across B.C., the country and around the world.
Research Pillar 2
Research by or with the School of Medicine
Faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students at the School of Medicine will all take part in research and scholarly activities aimed at making our health-care system better. Changing the health system needs research that involves many different areas of study.
In this pillar, we aim to lead and participate in research that includes many fields, such as population health, epidemiology, medical education, program evaluation, quality improvement, health policy, ethics, digital health, health innovation and implementation science.
Our goal is to help build a strong, inclusive primary-care learning system that will allow us to work together towards health system change and can be implemented and sustained for the benefit of all B.C. residents.
Partnership with the community, other research disciplines and health-care organizations will be critical to our success.
